RHEL4: Permission denied as root when running trying to write to /usr/sbin

Hi all,

I'm new to Red Hat and I've encountered a problem that has me scratching my head. I'm trying to install net-snmpd using up2date. When I run this as root, it ends with the following:

Code:
Installing...
   1:net-snmp warning: /etc/logrotate.d/snmpd created as /etc/logrotate.d/snmpd.rpmnew
warning: /etc/rc.d/init.d/snmpd created as /etc/rc.d/init.d/snmpd.rpmnew
warning: /etc/rc.d/init.d/snmptrapd created as /etc/rc.d/init.d/snmptrapd.rpmnew
warning: /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf created as /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf.rpmnew
########################################### [100%]
error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/sbin/snmpd;471f8145: cpio: open
There was a fatal RPM install error. The message was:
There was a rpm unpack error installing the package: net-snmp-5.1.2-11.EL4.10.0.1
This suggested to me that there were some permission issues in /usr/sbin, so again, as root, I tried mkdir /usr/sbin/foo and I got a permission denied error. The permissions on /usr/sbin look good, but I can't seem to do anything in there as root. (I've used whoami and id to confirm I'm logged in as root.)

Is there a trick to this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Will

Any chance /usr is on a read-only mounted partition or the tree is chattr'ed immutable?
