RHEL AS 3.8 package manager problem

Hello everybody,

Yesterday i needed to install the gnome development packages and KDE desktop enviroment in one server with RHEL AS 3.8 (using the graphical package manager), KDE installed with no problems, but when i selected the gnome development and press the update button, i got a message window telling me that the package :
XFree86-data-libs is not locatable and that it is needed by XFree86-4.3.0-115.EL ..... nothing very extrange until here but..

then i checked in a terminal with : rpm -q -a|grep XFree86-data-libs and the package appears as installed.....i found the rpm of the package and reinstalled it via command line, with no luck, actually this machine does not have internet access to run an up2date.
what can i do to solve this?
pd: this happens when i try to install any of the graphical enviroment development packages.
thanks in advance to all of you.

This is not possible, RHEL3 has no such rpm package named XFree86-data-libs but does have one named XFree86-libs-data. So if what you state is indeed fact then you have a bad package requirement.

FYI: for RHEL3 AS update 8 the latest XFree86 rpm package is XFree86-4.3.0-120.EL and besides update 9 is out which has XFree86-4.3.0-122 available, time to update.

It would be nice if you showed the actual output from the typed commands (the manual reinstall) and the easier typed command; rpm -qa XFree86-data-libs

Question

you're right i mistyped the package name(it is: XFree86-libs-data), today I found the culprit for my problem and it were 3 packages installed by one of my partners, for some oracle 8 configuration.....

they were:
compat-egcs-6.2-1.1.2.16
compat-egcs-objc-6.2-1.1.2.16
compat-egcs-c++-6.2-1.1.2.16
After I removed them, the package manager no longer generate errors..... well, sort of.... now when i try to install a package it asks for the corresponding disk , I inserted it in the cdrom , the system recognizes the disk, but the package manager not.....

Then as a suggestion either use a valid RHN account to install the packages needed, or switch over to use CentOS;

http://www.centos.org/

CentOS is a 100% binary freely available "clone" of RHEL-AS+Workstation.

Thankyou Lenard, i have a valid RHN account, but while the 3 packages that i mention before
Quote:
compat-egcs-6.2-1.1.2.16
compat-egcs-objc-6.2-1.1.2.16
compat-egcs-c++-6.2-1.1.2.16
where installed, even that did not work....but after uninstalling them, up2date worked fine, I will give a try to centos, it looks interesting, but unfortunately, i have to stay in RHEL in the production environment.
