RHEL 5.7 installing differntly on VM vs. physical machine?

Hello All. I'm currently installing RHEL 5.7 for a project at work. When I install the OS in a virtual machine it automatically puts kernel files in /usr/src and allows me to install the drivers needed for my device, but when I do the install on a physical machine (I've installed on a Dell 2950 and a Dell R620) these files are not there. Can anyone explain why this would happen and how I can fix it? I'm learning RHEl as I go, so forgive me if there's something I'm overlooking!
Thanks!

for the older legacy hardware/software RHEL5

it has been a while so

the vm and the physical computer would have DIFFERENT hardware
so drivers will be different

the source for kernels
normally would not be installed unless you install it for building drivers

also keep in mind 5.7 is 4 minor versions and 4 years out of date
the current in the legacy rhel5 is 5.11
