RHEL 4 browsers won't start

I have a RHEL 4 U4 x86 system. Today, I updated it to the latest packages (including the 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL kernel). After the update, Firefox and htmlview do not start, and no error is written into /var/log/messages. Also, running 'man ls' produces an empty page.

What can I do to diagnose this problem?

A combination of removing/re-installing NetWorker, upgrading to a new JRE, and re-creating the symblic link to fixed the web browser problem. But a 'man ls' still returns an empty page. What should I do?
