rh9 bootdisk failed
hello
I've installed on my laptop winxp and rh 9. no bootloader, I want to boot the linbux from floppy, after creating a disk during the installtion I try to boot via the disk but I keep getting an bootdisk failed, change diosk message. how can I fix it? currently I have no way to boot the linux and I don't want to use bootloaders. help please dagg |
there's no way u can boot into linux without havin a linux bootable disk or a bootloader.
use ur friend's Pc which runs rh9 n create a bootdisk. after u've booted in linux u can create a bootdisk using command 'mkbootdisk' (without quotes). if u want 2 install a bootloader instead use the linuxconf utility. |
so you say that I can't create an bootdisk without installing an bootloader (which I don't want to install)?
if I install an bootloader to create the bootdisk I'll be able to uninstall the bootloader later without damaging the MBR? last time I damaged my MBR and I had to reinstall my windows and linux and I don't want to install it again |
how would u b able 2 create a linux bootdisk if u r not booting into linux? n further how wil u b able to install bootloader without going into linux? u either need 2 hav a bootdisk or a bootloader 2 boot into linux.
if u get the bootdisk n booted into linux.... install bootloader.........created another bootdisk................. n now u want 2 uninstall the bootloader from mbr, u can giv the command fdisk /mbr (thro' windows command prompt) to clear the bootloader frm ur mbr. keep ur windows bootable floppy handy for tat. |
I had the same problem with a bootdisk, finally figured out the floppy was bad. It won't tell you that when you make the bootdisk, so now I always read the floppy back in to make sure there are no i/o errors.
I think what was said earlier is that you need to get another boot disk (that works) from a friend and use that to boot. I don't think anyone is saying that you have to use a bootloader, but I couldn't say for sure as I have one installed on my machine (dual boot win98 or rhat v9), but I do know that in the past when re-installing windows it overwrote the MBR and I was still able to boot linux from the floppy. |
