RH9.0 Kernel Source 2.4.20-9 doesn't appear to install
Hi.
I'm trying to update the kernel that comes with rh9.0 2.4.20-8 to 2.4.20-9 and i've downloaded the binary rpm and the source rpm. I installed the binary rpm and can boot it but my NVIDIA fx5200 fails to load because the drivers i downloaded need to be rebuilt for 20-9. (they work fine on 20-8). When the driver script starts running it detects that it needs to rebuild some interface layer for the 20.9 kernel and trys to do so. It then reports that it can't find the kernel source. I can't find it anywhere either. I can find the 20-9 binaries no probs, and as i say, i can boot that version into text mode.
When I try to install the src rpm i do a 'rpm -ivh <package>'. It appears to work ok. it moans about some key not being correct but it still unpacks it all ok. I get the same moan about the binary but it works fine.
Ooops. You grabbed the wrong one, I am thinking. I believe you want the one named something like
kernel-source-2.4.20-20.9.athlon.rpm
What you grabbed was the sources needed to build the RPM, the SRPM so called. It does have the kernel sources in it, but it puts then is a different set of directories (check our usr/src/linux-2.4/SRPM, or something like that).
Look for the other one "kernel-source-whatever" and see if that isn't what you wanted.
thanks lads. are you sure it's the i386 flavour i need and not the athlon/i686 or something flavour? whats the difference between the i686 and athlon anyway?
There is no kernel-source binary rpm for .athlon or .i686.
The included kernel source code is generic and the same for the different x86 compatible architectures. Red Hat's kernel config files are included, too. Just have a look at the package contents.
You will have to look. The Athlon may be just a "386" in diguise just like the Pentium. My P4 gets the same 386 Kernel that, well, 386's do. If I want the kernel "optimized" for the P4, I have to get the 386 sources and build the kernel myself.
So, you'll have to look around and see if there is a native Athlon kernel source; otherwise I would think that the '386' would do. YMMV.
I have just started configure my new box with an ASUS P4P800deluxe mainboard, a NVIDIA fx5200 graphics and dual boot for winxp and RH9 with GRUB. Running CPU P4 2.4/800.
After some initial problems with the screen communication I succeeded by downloading the display driver from NVIDIA website and editing in the xconfig file.
But - now I have problems with the network connection and the audio neither of them work.
I have tried to download the source rpm and also to patch the kernel with the patch file that is provided on their site but with no success. My kernel 2.4.20-8.
If you are up and running, how did you fix the problem?
