rh 9.0 hangs on my vectra

I'm having a problem with RH 9.0 on a dual-cpu (pentium-pro 200MHz)
vectra xw, that perhaps someone could give me some guidance.

The machine has and adaptec adaptor, a single SCSI disk (18G), a
SCSI tape, an IDE zip and an IDE cd-rom. Memory is 512M.

The installation went OK, no problems booting from the CD. But
the first problem was with grub. After spending innumerable hours
on getting the system to boot from the HD with grub, I gave up and
setup lilo. That finally went OK. However the system is unstable
with every three versions of the kernel (2.4.20-6), that is the
single processor, the smp and the bigmem. During the booting
process, right after it prints "firstboot", the screen goes dark,
and after a short while continues the process, eventually finishing
it. But it never goes into the graphic mode. The screen shows
every few seconds the console login prompt and disappears, coming
back after a few seconds.

I'm at a loss here, I don't even know what this behaviour could
be due to. I would appreciate any help.

Regards,

Dan

Re: rh 9.0 hangs on my vectra

After poking around in /var/log it appears that the problem is the X server. I grabbed
the messages and XFree86.log* files but I cannot draw any conclusions from them. If
someone with the right knowledge is willing to look at them I'll be glad to send them.
Thanks,

Daniel
