RedHat 9 - PCMCIA NIC - Nothing...
Hi,
I'm sure this has a fairly elementary solution, but, being something of a Linux (installation) Newbie I'm completely bewildered by it.
I have a low-end Pentium laptop that I'd intended to use as a webserver, using a Grey Cell 2220 PCMCIA NIC. When I first booted off the RH9 boot/pcmcia driver floppy combination, this NIC successfully started up, contacted the installation mirror site, and happily ran an installation with no complaints whatsoever.
However, after rebooting into run-level 3 or 5, it seems to make absolutely no effort to recognise or otherwise indicate any knowledge of this NIC. The startup process says "PCMCIA [OK]" but doesn't make that nice Beep-beep noise.
There's an /etc/pcmcia directory which mentions the NIC in the config file, but nothing in the boot logs, no errors - nothing.
I tried to add it manually as new hardware in Gnome, but gave up because the X environment runs like a wounded badger on this old box, and anyway I would have thought it would have recognised it automatically. However, I'm happy to trawl through another installation if required.
Odd thing is, RH7.3 works just great with it - I would never have had to re-install had it not been for the presence of a RootKit (I feel violated.)
Any help you can offer would be most gratefully accepted - if I can offer any more information to help find an answer, I'll be falling over myself to do it.
Yours,
Desperate from Luton.
