Redhat 9.0 boot-up hanging

I've installed Red Hat 9.0 in both my old notebook and a new desktop I've built. They both suffer from the same problem; Red Hat does not boot. It hangs during the partition check on hda. I tried installing 8.0 in the notebook after 9.0 wouldn't boot, and it does the same thing. Yet Caldera 2.3 installs just fine and works! Does anybody know or have any idea why Red Hat would hang during the partition check? The notebook has a 4 gig drive and a 350 mHz processor (AMD K6), and the Desktop I built has a 700mHz AMD-K6 II CPU.
Any help would eb greatly appreciated.
The notebook has 32 MB of memory, and the desktop has 128.

Personally, I'd look at the problem closer with a copy of tomsrtbt. Try to boot the system using the distro at http://toms.net and run some diagnostic tools (fsck, dmesg, etc) after mounting the partitions.

Best,
Adam
