redhat 7.3 installation - no eth0 device
 

I've been trying to install redhat 7.3 (kernel version 2.4.18-3smp) and the installation process completes without error, but results in no eth0 device. (System Settings > Network Configuartion > Devices is empty, as is Hardware).

I've scanned through the output of dmesg and lsmod finding no hints of errors.

I'm very much more familiar with debian which I have working on a machine with an identical hardware configuration. (Is there a way I can find out what my network card is? I've found the redhat hardware compatibility site, I just don't know which card I have).

Any suggestions for things I can try?

Why Redhat 7.3 and not Fedora Core or RHEL? You do know that all Redhat Linux distros version 9 and below no longer have official security updates and support.

What type of network card do you have?

I wanted to use redhat 7.3 because I want to install Sun iPlanet 8.0 which supports redhat 7.2.

I decided to resolve the problem first in an up-to-date Redhat and once I have the answer, consider reinstalling redhat 7.
I have installed Fedora Core 4. Again installation succeeds.

dmesg states:
eth0: Yukon Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Adapter
The only other mention of eth0 in dmesg is:
eth0: no IPv6 routers present

In Gnome Desktop > System Settings > Network Configuration > Devices:
eth0 is listed with status Inactive

When I click Activate the system-config-network dialog appears, and after a short wait reports:
Cannot activate network device eth0!
Determining IP information for eth0... failed

Under the Hardware tab eth0 has the descriptin "Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet Controller". If I click Edit, then in the Resource section the IRQ is Unknown and the remaining info MEM, IO, etc. is blank.


Any suggestions?

Edit: a quick search for both the Yukon, Marvell and 88E8001 in the Linux HCL section turns up no entries. (Although I am assuming I have this same card working in Debian sarge on a different machine)

Redhat 7.3 is the worst Linux I have ever seen. I thought I needed it because I have a p2 processor w/350 mhz cpu. I was wrong. Ubuntu runs fine with Gnome and is perfect for my 4 gb hdd because it uses 1.8gb. A microwave does Redhat cds well. When was Linux supposed to be closed source. Redhat 7.3 looks like Sh$%

I resolved the issue by installing redhat 7.3 and using an old ethernet card that was supported.

go to www.fedoralegacy.org RedHat volunteer yum support for updates is still available there, links for upgrades for your cards, as well as for you RH9 users. continuing updates and auto-methods for obtaining them and related tutorials is linked in at the site.
closed availability for 8.0 and 7.2 advanced updates are still accessible as well, although it has been discontinued as an active project.
