redhat 6.1 & 9 can't install unable to mount root fs on48:05invalid compressed format

I have redhat 9 and i tested on two computers. The first one is a packard bell pentium 75 which has redhat 6.1 installed from a disc that came with a book, but redhat 6.1 or redhat 9 won't install on a 300mhz Dell Optiplex Gxa (128Mb of RAM), which has roughly the same message that I receive when I try to install redhat 9. I tested the redhat 9 disc on the pentium 75 and it works. I tested the RAM on the Dell Optiplex GXa with memtest86 and no errors. I know that the optiplex GXa is compatible with linux because others have the optiplex GXa running redhat.

the message I receive is as follows:

Ramdisk: Compressed image found at block 0
Invalid compressed format (err=1)<6> Freeing initrd memory: 2640k freed
VFS: Cannot open root device "" or 48:05
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 48:05

That is what I get scrolling accross the screen on startup. after the kernel panic statement, the screen stops. It seems that there is a problem with the ramdisk but that is as far as I can tell.
thank you in advance for your help. Sincerely, jerry P

It sounds like bad RAM. The Ramdisk decompression may be finding problems that your memtest86 utility missed.
