Red Hat AS 4, Nic dies during boot process

Hi all, I am running Red Hat,AS 4 enterprise, 2.4 kernel, on a HP dc5000 sff. I use this machine only to run NTOP network monitoring. This machine ran fine from build for about 3 months when (for whatever reason) it needed a reboot. During the boot up process, while brining up eth0 the link light for the onboard nic goes out. There are no boot errors but i have no network connection. After any number of reboots it would succeed (until today). The part that makes this worse is that when i boot without a network connection, i fail authentication logging on locally, even root. I am a Windows admin so i touch linux seldom (unfortunatley), but am pretty stumped. The nic is an onboard/broadcom but since i cant log, on I'm not sure which broadcom (sorry). Any help is apreciated.

Red Hat,AS 4 enterprise, 2.4 kernel, not sure how u installed that. Check if you have made any change in the network setting physically. Is this a giga bit ethernet..if so disable the auto neg and see if that helps.

http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_79_3788.shtm ( works in RHEL 4 as well )

You can see the details of the NIC ( hardware ) using :

#lspci
