Red Hat 9 Install Issue (Video Card)

Hey guys,

This is my situation. I need to get RH9 installed on a few development PC's. The problem is, I can't even get into the install gui. Everytime i boot from the CD i get the prompt to install, i hit Enter, and then i go blank. I"m pretty possitive its b/c of video card.

The PC's are all brand new Dell OptiPlex 3GHz P4 w\ 128MB Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 w\ DVI and VGA.

Do i need to install w\o the gui and find the video driver? (i hope not) But if so, i've never done that before, can someone let me know what i have to look forward to. And just to help me out more, could you please tell me a good place to find the driver?

If you guys need some more info to help, just let me know i'll provide whatever is needed.

Thanks in advance and i hope someone can help me out here.

you could go head install it in text base. then just go download your video drive from www.nvidia.com.
then install your driver.
don't ask me how to install it, because i have a radeon 9600 pro.

without the drivers, try changing your display to 'vesa' in 16 bit mode at 1024x768 or 800x600. This should allow you to at least load X. Now, the drivers are very easy to install because they come as a .run file. Just do the following (Assuming the latest driver):

$ sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run

Make sure you have no instances of X open when you do this (just 'init 3' to get into full CLI).

Once you do the installation, just modify /etc/X11/XF86config so that the driver, instead of 'vesa' or 'nv' is 'nvidia'. Then change the resolution to what you would like.

I don't think that will work for me just yet. You see, i don't have Linux installed yet. I only have blank partitions. I'm trying to install Linux, and i can't get the GUI of anaconda to appear. So therefore i can't go through the install from a GUI. I have to get linux installed before i can do what you suggested.

But yeah that is a very good idea so i may try it. But then again, its not very different from what i was going to do anyways. Which is install Linux from text-base, set inittab run level to 1, install Nvidia driver, then set my inittab run level back to 5.

Thanks for the suggestion though, i might have to try it.
