Smile red hat 9 has become slow on sata drive

hi guys,
i have installed red hat 9 on intel p4 3ghz,1 gb ram, with 300gb Seagate sata drive. i am running squid for internet, mail & web application and mysql database & php on this. The system becomes very slow when i use the graphical user interface (xwindow) and applications open up very late.

earlier i had a similar setup on fedora core 2, without the skate sata drive earlier i was using normal HDD and it was running quite very well, i want to know is this the problem with the sata drive or with the red hat 9.
