u checked these CDs in MS windowz? windows hides known file types by default. if u installed realplayer in windows, it thinks rpm files must be runned with real player. so it hides "rpm"

now i can see my rh9 CDs.. in my first CD..
there r these folders:
dosutils images isolinux RedHat

there r lots of *.rpm files in \RedHat\RPMS

it must be same for your CD.. is it?

ia64 means 64 bits CPUs ..

MD5SUM files are need to check if your downloaded files is correct..

.iso is a file type. if u wanna burn a CD like bootable, u need these CD image files.

I have the seperate folders of RPMs and SRPMs in the folder of
REDHAT in the 4th and 5th cds
and RPMs in first three Cds
the SRPMs have the extension of *.scr.rpm
and are NOt the binary packages
they have only the header files for compilation of respective
software, required by GCC

src rpm files are source rpm files. They are not really needed.

They are used to create rpm files for your system rather than a generic 'catch all' system. RPM files (RedHat Package Manager files) are install files.

To install, open a console, type su to become root (after also entering the root password) and type in:

rpm -ivh <packagename>.rpm to install
rpm -Uvh <packagename.rpm to upgrade a program
rpm -e <program> to uninstall

Is Redhat 9 Free ?

Please bear with me - TOTAL newbie in linux. Getting a new HDD and decided to install linux on that. But Im really confused over Fedora, Debian and Radhat.
I read Redhat is no more free but they've got the free version called Fedora.
But I came across this link which seems to have 3 redhat 9 iso files for download ? They are named shrike though.
http://mymirror.asiaosc.org/redhat/linux/9/en/iso/i386/
Someone please help me
Thanks

redhat 9 version u are asking about is rh9 shrike. I use rh9 and find it very user friendly but if u want support then u would be better using fedora which is also a free version based around redhat. If u check out this link u may find some useful advice about rh9 and fedora and also about d/loading and burning iso images for install.

Hi
Im currently using Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition on my PC which is really good as a server though no other machines are networked to it. On getting a new HDD I need a linux version that'll act like a good server. I heard Debian is excellent for this ?
Regarding Redhat support - what do they mean by 'Red Hat will stop supporting it soon' ?
