Query regarding kernel.shmall value in RHEL 5 (x86_64)

Hello all,

The default value of *kernel.shmall* in RHEL5 (x86_64) machine is
"4294967296" which I believe is in pages. I have checked in my RHEL4 64bit machine and the shmall value is *2097152* which I believe is the default value in other RHEL versions also.

In RHEL5 64bit the default value is 4294967296*4096 = 17592186044416
bytes, which is around 16TB. Please correct me if my calculation is wrong here.

Please tell me if the default value *4294967296* in RHEL5(x86_64) is the correct one or not? If yes, why this has been set to such a big value?
