problems booting redhat 7.0

I am having problems booting my installation of red hat linux 7.0. When I try to boot the system I get the message according to /var/run/gdm.pid was already running, but seems to have been mysteriously murdered. I would really appreciate help with this problem. My machine is emachine 366i2 with 256 mb ram

You get the message what??? (quote message please, it dosn't help if you interpret it.)

Apart from that - forget RH7, use RH9 or Fedora. Otherwise you just have an uphill battle ahead getting everything to go properly.
