Posiible CDROM issue 'locks' machine

I've checked and found this error on the web, but I can't see any answers.

Does anyone know what may have caused the error below? It has only happened once so far. The CDROM was not being used at all.
REDHAT 8.0

The nett effect of the error, is as reported elsewhere, that the PC grinds to a standstill, making you think that the PC has locked you out. I managed to get top running while the error persisted, but it shown nowthing out of the ordinary - apart from the memory and swap usage seemed high.

The error in the message log repeats every 10 seconds or so:

Feb 19 13:43:59 retsol1 kernel: scsi0 : channel 0 target 0 lun 0 request sense failed, performing reset.
Feb 19 13:43:59 retsol1 kernel: SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.

Feb 19 13:44:05 retsol1 kernel: ^ISense class 0, sense error 0, extended sense 0

Rebooting cleared the problem. Any ideas as to why it occurred?

Red Hat Linux 8.0 has reached end-of-life long ago and is unsupported. See whether you can reproduce it with the more recent distribution versions, such as Fedora Core 3.
