Password Check is Passwords Skipped in Login Screen, Root System Settings Change in X

Hi,

My disk drive had a little bit of problems - so that I can't login to Redhat 8 in X. When the screen asks for my username, it then rejects it saying my usename and/or password are incorrect.

I also cannot login with root in X.

I can login with my user name in the command line.

I can do a work around by logging into X through the command line with startx

Also, when I try to change a system setting under Gnome, it briefly asks for my root password and before I can enter anything, it rejects it.

I think there is a password script problem?

Any ideas? I recently ran an fsck to fix a few things on the hard drive.

Might want to use the rpm -Va command to verify the integrity of your packages. You'll probably get a number of flagged packages, but specifically look for anything PAM-related or other critical authentication files. Btw, what led you to believe you had HD damage?
