Panel Eradication and ToolTip Reappearance
 

I have a standard build of RedHat 9 (Shrike) and have been using the default GNOME desktop quite happily for some time. Maybe it was peer pressure, or simply a Friday afternoon whim, but I decided to try the KDE desktop. Immediately following login a number of errors kept flashing up relating mainly to the workspace switcher, which I was unable to resolve and so I gave up and went back to the GNOME desktop. Unfortunately that had also got screwed up, introducing amongst other things an edge panel which when deleted reappears at the start of the next session and the failure of the ToolTip to pop-up when one hovers over a launcher/button etc. I realise these are not big issues, but they are annoying.

Has anybody got any ideas (apart from listening to your elders when they tell you that if it ain't bust don't fix it).
