No Sound - IBM 300PL and Red Hat 9

I have an IBM PL 300 Tower, with Crystal 4237B Chipset on my audio card. When the system boots fo rthe 2nd time it find the sound card ( it's built into the mother board ) but the sound does not work.

Any suggestions for correcting this ?

I found the following info direct from IBM...

IBM Personal Computing solutions PL 300 includes compliance to APM and ACPI 1.0 standards...
So, you have acpi. Either recomplile the kernel for acpi support, or ditch Redhat for Suse or Mandrake

Ok I can understand that - now for the silly question. Where do I get the info to "re-complie" the kernal. Is there a process to doing this, and correctly adding the above support ?

If so, where can I find that info ?

Also, is there no other driver that can be used for this, without doing a re-complie of the Kernal.

Thanks in advance,

Hi!

I have two IBM machines:
IBM Netfinity 1000
IBM PC300 PL6892

Both are tower cases with the same motherboard except the BIOS. Therefore they have same sound chipset and there is no any problem on audio.

Some suggestion:
1) Check the Audio setting in BIOS. If it is disable and you enable it, kudzu might detect the soundcard during bootup.
2) Run redhat-config-soundcard
3) Package missing?
