Newbie install: Why does computer hang on "starting pcmcia" on boot?
 

How do I fix the "starting pcmcia" hang on boot. Yes, I am new and would be forever thankful if someone would turn the light on for me. I want to be a linux evangelist but need some help getting started.

Distribution attempted: Redhat 6.2 boxed set
Hardware: Toshiba satellite 2655XDVD
KDE workstation installation

Any other suggestions?

I think you can specify 'nopcmcia' on the boot: prompt when you first boot the kernel to start the installation. This should prevent the system from probing for pcmcia devices, which sounds like it is hanging your system.
So, when you first start, you should have a 'Boot:' prompt. put the kernel name, followed by 'nopcmcia'.

PS - I'll be interested to see how your installation goes, as I plan to put Linux on a Satellite 4090XDVD in a few days.

Thanks for the motivation and suggestions. I was fussed at for trying an old installation and directed to a single disk installation of Debian called "Mint" which is intuitive and supposedly installs with minimal effort (just what I need). I am sure that there are lots of variations out there and would love to have someone to Email with and pick their brains. For now I am just trying to get up and running on Linux. I am writing from the only running computer in the house (1 of 5). I plan on converting all as soon as I get smart enough. Thanks again for your words of encouragement. Jay

Well, to use the word 'smart' very loosely, I think it's fair to say that when it comes to learning Linux, there's a LOT to learn before anyone can call themselves 'smart' to any degree. :)
That said, it sounds like you have your work cut out for you, with 1/5 machines running, but you definitely have arrived at the right place -- there are lots of smart, knowledgeable people around here, and a treasure-trove of information!
