New install: Why do I get "starting pcmcia" and a flashing cursor?

I am a newbie trying Linux. I acquired a box set of Redhat 6.2 and completed the installation for the "KDE workstation" on an old Toshiba Satallite 2655XDVD laptop. Everything loaded off the cdrom which I installed in "text" mode. When the computer rebooted after the install it got to the Starting pcmcia part of the mounting other filesystems section and stopped with a flashing cursor (no green OK). What have I done wrong and how do I get up and going? I am excited to be in your community but am just a newbie. Please assume that I know very little. Please help. Jay

Starting PCmcai and flashing cursor.

The problem you described seems to be related to PCMCIA drivers. RedHat 6.2 is not being able to load proper drivers for your PCMCIA device.
Why are you using redhat 6.2 when latest linux distributions are avalible from redhat like fedora 6 and latest fedora7. I think using these linux distributions you should get your problem solved.

But if you still want to use same OS,try disabling your PCMCIA devices in the BIOS of your laptop. This will no more need PCMCIA drivers to get loaded when your Laptop boots. Not sure this will work!
