Question mplayer audio codecs

I tried playing a .mov file on mplayer. It gave me an audio format error. I downloaded a bunch of audio codecs but don't know what to do with them. Any ideas?

Download the codec pack from the mplayer website, and put them in: /usr/lib/win32

But you have to be sure to compile mplayer with "win32 codecs" enabled.

I'm a home user and strictly a GUI person (right now anyway). I can cookbook in Terminal however.
Ok, I got the thing untarred. Still no audio though. I keep getting error "could not initialize/open audio device: no sound"
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for your patience
