When the screen gooes blank, press ctrl-alt-F2. This should give you a text login screen. Than you need to open the XF86Config file in a text editor like emacs. The file is located /etc/X11/XF86Config. When viewing this file there is a section for monitor, you need to make sure the setting are exact to your monitor specifications.
