Monitor resolution problem

i am using redhat linux 9 and windows. the cpu is 'amd semron' with motherboard 'auss a7n8xvm 400' with 'nvidia' chipset... the monitor is 'samsung syngmaster 591s'....the monitor resolution is '1024*780'...

The problem is i always geting this resolution in windows... but i only get '800*640' maximum in redhat linux 9...

the i try to change (add the value 1024*780) the resolution entry of monitor in '/etc/X11/XF86config' to 1024*780... but after restarting the dispalay is not working. and also somthing like "HZ ?" is only display in monitor...

but i can enter into the system via non graphical mode (alt + cntrl + f1)...

how can i fix this problem...

This means that your monitor can't handle the mode that X tries to use.
1) See if you have the right horizontal/vertical resolutions
From what i get in google, your monitor support 30-55 kHz Horizontal and 50-120 Hz vertical
( http://www.samsung.com/my/products/m...ercdt/591s.asp )
See in /etc/X11/XF86config if you have these values.

2) If you have these values then i guess the X server tries to use a "1024x768" (I guess you mean 768 and not 780)
that has a larger vertical resolution than your monitor supports. (your monitor supports 1024 × 768 @ 68Hz max)
You can make a modeline so that you can get the mode.

90% it is the first case. When redhat probed your monitor it put lower resolutions and you can't get decent modes.
