hi fellow desi...i guess the most important thing is to understand the kernel, and the best way to do that is to use linux itself..not sure of the books though..

there are lots of free books online in pdf format.. for linux of course it alos depends on what u want device drivers, linux internals etc...... if u dont have the patience to download them i can mail it 2 u just send a reply...............
