Angry kernel panic during installation

while booting up to install rh9, it freezes with a "kernel panic: cannot mount root fs on 48:05" message. I've tried linux mem=512 (ram size). I've also tried changing root fs, doesn't seem to work. I'm installing on compaq presario 6430nx with 120Gb of hd (5 different partitions). I've tried fedora core, and i keep getting the same message. Can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong?
N/B: on the same system mandrake installs fine but won't dual boot, no matter what i use lilo/grub and won't allow the configuration of the bootloader thats why i want to install redhat which i have on another system.
