kernel installation problem

Hi all!
I'm facing a very serious problem about kernel. My kernel is 2.4.22 and the distribution is Red Hat 9.0. The case is as follows:
At a time when I run my program with Bluetooth, suddenly the Linux halts. Then I pressed the reset button to reboot the PC. But when I chose the kernel version I used, when the bootloader checksed the system until 18.9%, error message was shown, and I tried few more times, but the situation still existed. Then I installed Red Hat Linux again, and then I installed and compiled the kernel 2.4.22 again. I followed the guidelines to do this action, and after I rebooted the PC, I chose the kernel 2.4.22. But when the kernel was compiling, a fatal error occured. It stated that "kernel panic: unable to mount root..........". Then I tried few more times, and then tried to install other kernel versions, but the results were the same. I followed the steps as I installed kernel before. So, I wish to know what's matter about this? Thank you very much.
P.S. It is very urgent! But as my yahoo email cannot be accessed, please PM me at h0207426@eee.hku.hk if you have any suggestion or solution. Thanks!
Michael

To answer the question and get you fixed up we the ones answering need the vitals involved besides the kernel version and distribution & version it is, like say... what kind of hardware does this system have? processor type, how many, hard disks and controllers, video, network card, usb, wifi, etc.

Even after you tell us all this I have some advice for updating the kernel. You can use yum, enable the repositories with it for updates for RH9 and update the kernel the easy way. That's the way I updated my Fedora and RH 7.2 systems.
