Internet connection problems - connection times out


Howdy ho,
Well I'm finally settling into using Red Hat 8.0 now after a lot of teething trouble (and a re-install after I totally messed it up), but I'm still having an issue with the internet.

My Red Hat server is connected via eth0 to a LAN. The ip address is dynamic (but I have also tried static ip) my firewall is turned off (iptables is disabled) and I have entered the proxy address to access the net.

When I open Mozilla and try to get to Google it sits there for a while then says "Operation timed out when attempting to contact www.google.com"

The server is online as I can ping it from a desktop machine and I can ping the default gateway from the server.

DNS is correctly configured.

Has anyone come across this problem before or has anyone got a lead I can follow or anything? I think I've exhausted everything on the web.

The two thoughts I have are:

1) Did you correctly enter the info about your default gateway? If you did, your routing table (run the command route -n) will have an entry similar to the following:

Code:
Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags Metric Ref    Use Iface
0.0.0.0         192.168.1.123   0.0.0.0         UG    0      0        0 eth0
where, in this case, the default gateway is available via eth0 at 192.168.1.123

2) Are you sure your DNS is configured properly? If item (1) was correct, try the following 3 commands:

Code:
ping localhost
ping 64.179.4.146
ping www.linuxquestions.org
If the first two work, but the third does not, you have DNS problems.

Thanks for the advice...however...
Routing table is correct. The entry for the default gateway is correct. I can ping localhost (127.0.0.1) and I can resolve the IP of www.linuxquestions.org but I cannot ping it. DNS is fine as I can resolve all domain names but I cannot ping them (or access the page online).

I think it is something to do with the fact that our default gateway doesn't go straight out to the WWW, it actually goes to a broadband consortium proxy server which is miles away. They have no idea why I can't get to the internet...

The fact that you are not directly connected to the I-net might be why your pings are not working.

Have you tried getting to the internet with any other browsers? Even a text browser such as lynx? Do you maybe need to configure proxy settings on your browser? I am just trying to come up with some explanation no matter how remote ...
