Installing softwares /update methods in centos6

Good Morning everyone,
I have just switched to centos6 from ubuntu. I was just googling to adapt to centos environment and just post this query here so that to get some specific answers.

Q1: How to update centos similar to "apt-get update in ubuntu",adding, removing and enabling any repository?

Q2: Installing vlc ,c/c++ compiler as from this I will automatically learn to install softwares in centos?

Q3: Any other thing you want to share specifically about centos.

1 - "yum update"

2 - "yum install vlc" - in your other thread you mentioned an "rf" rpm, so you probably want to install the repoforge package - http://repoforge.org/use/ and then yum will do the rest of the magic for you.

3 - yeah.. you shouldn't run vlc on centos. You can, clearly, but if that is your starting point, it suggests that you've chosen the wrong distribution. CentOS is for servers, not desktops etc...

Is it wrong if I explore it for desktop use as previously I was using ubuntu which is a good OS but newer versions after 11.10 have some hiccups and some time I become frustrated. I have heared a lot about centos as a stable OS so I have decide to switch to centos and will continue to explore this OS.

Reply to 1:
"yum update" requires lots of Mb of data around 181Mb in my case,But in ubuntu it only takes around 10Mb if you are not going to upgrade most of the packages using "apt-get upgrade".

Reply to 2:
Please elaborate installation of vlc so that it helps me in clearing the concepts. Why I need to repoforge package to install vlc? As in other thread I have said I have downloaded the .rpm package for vlc from vlc site but when I installed it through rpm utility but it shows some dependencies issues, please tell me how to resolve such dependencies and install vlc manually.

New Q4: If possible tell me how to save packages while installing through yum so that after fresh installation I would be able to use saved packages for installation.

1 - well that just depends how many updates there are. CentOS 6 will use delta rpms where available, which greatly reduces the amount of data downloaded.

2 - the RPM you got was from repoforge, and so you can avoid downloading it, and any other repoforge dependencies it is configured to require by correctly installing repoforge as a repository for yum.

3 - Obviously you can do whatever you want, but support for newer, funkier hardware can be lacking, media applications, e.g. vlc, are not core to the main repos, wireless / hibernation etc, can suck, as that's not what servers do.
