Installing MS Windows XP on Basic RHEL WS 4.0

I have bought a new Core 2 Duo preloaded with BASE LINUX RHEL WS 4.0 PRELOADED.

How can I load MS Windows XP without reformatting the hard disk.

I would like to keep LINUX, and run MS Windows on the same PC.

Please keep in mind

a) There is no FDD
b) The Linux CDs have not been provided with the PC.

Your help and cooperation would be greatly appreciated.

There are many here who need this advice. Too many people are simply reformatting the hdd, killing Linux in the process.

How is it that you have PCs with RHEL but no disks? I thought that Windows PCs were the only ones with this annoyance. If you don't have the licenses for RHEL, then it is not going to be very useful to you.

You have several choices:
use a virtual machine such as VMware
Get RHEL CDs and re-partition the drive
Get Centos (free clone of RHEL)
Install another harddrive (unless it's a laptop...)

And--my personal bias --don't use RedHat. If your situation allows, there are much better choices.

Thank you, Lenard, for the links.

This a new PC from India's biggest PC vendor HCL Ltd.

Damned, if I know why they didn't provide the RHEL CDs.

I've paid for the stuff, and I'm going to make them cough up the CDs.

And, after visiting this site, I see that RHEL 4.0 is outdated!!!

The PC is less than 10 days old, and bears a stamp of Sept. 2007.

It almost seems like they want us to kill the preloaded Linux.

I have downloaded VMWare, but haven't figured out how to use it yet. Do I need the Linux Cd for that ?

Which version of Centos should I download ? 4.0,..,4.5,..5.0 ?

Installing another HD will be a problem (I think) because the PC is under a 3 yrs warranty, and I can open up the case.

But I will try to get the Vendor to add a HDD.

If you wait about a week CentOS 5.1 will be available. CentOS 4.5 is the basically the same as RHEL 4 update 5. Given the choices get either CentOS 4.5 or 5. The CentOS link I provided earlier explains how to switch to CentOS without having to install a 'new' OS.

Which version and file type of VMWare did you download?? VMware provides instructions for installation, example: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/server_admin_manual.pdf

http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/
