One thing on my mind. Have you tried to use any livecd distro like Knoppix to login to linux and then mount your RH9 partition ?
May be then you can chroot into RH9 system and reinstall your GRUB bootloader.
Just another path you could explore

Yeah, it's a pain, but on the bright side I'm learning about boot loaders, MBRs, and soon Knoppix, thanks.
In the mean time, I've tried another route, because I'd also like to network 3 PCs with different OSes - I bought 2 inexpensive generic PCs and tried to install RH9 on one and Solaris 9 on the other, but problems again. I get a monitor "FREQ - OUT OF RANGE" for RH9, that I didn't get on a previous HP a405n installation. How can it not recognize the same monitor?
