Install of Red Hat Enterprise Server 5.1 Hangs at the very begin
Hi!,
I'm trying to install RED HAT ENTERPRISE 5.1 on a DELL PowerEdge 1950. The installer hangs at the very begin with:
"ISOLINUX 3.11 2005-09-02 Copyright (C) 1994-2005 H. Peter Anvin"
nothing happens after that, it just stays there.
I've have downloaded twice the ISO's from the red hat network, the first time I burn them three times, and probe it in another server (PowerEdge SC 1435). I've burned only once the second downloaded ISO's. All the times I tried install it, the installation hangs in the same point.
I've done a checksum with WinMD5Sum of the downloaded ISO's and they are fine.
I'm not asking for support in Red Hat Network because mi suscription is a 30-day evaluation.
I have 5.1 intalled on a 1950 with no problems. Did you try using the Dell provided server setup cd that takes you through raid setup and everything?
frndrfoe,
Thanks for your post.
Yes, I have tried with the Setup CD of Dell, when i'm prompted to introduce red hat media, I insert CD #1, and always got same result: the disk is not correct.
Right now, I'm trying whit Red Hat Enterprise AS 4.5.
I tried it in mi SC1435, it booted perfectly, but in my 1950, it hangs... I have cleared the Disks and RAID array, and reconfigure RAID. I've got the same results...
almost sounds like a cdrom hardware issue we had once. Do you have another dell server with an interchangeable cd drive you could try?
A few hours ago, I've chated with a Dell's Technical Support. They said that I should use the server assistance that comes with my Power Edge. And told me that it would support only Red Hat 4, not Red Hat 4.5, and if I want to install that version, I'd have to download the new server assistance version, or I'd have to install it manually... I didn't like that answer, since I can't even boot the cd manually...
I'm downloading right now the new server assistance...
By the way, I don't have a interchangeable cd drive...
this might be off the wall but did you create a swap partition.
Drakeo,
Thanks for posting. Correct me if I'm wrong: the swap partition is created during installation once it has booted.... If the installation never boots, I can not create that swap partition...
I have installed rhel5 on a 1950 with the server assistant with no problem and several times on my workstation and within vmware esx & gsx and I have never seen that problem. I suspect the cdrom or the media but then again...
Have you tried installing rhel4 with the server assistant just to test?
Hi everybody...
I've finally solved mi problem. It wasn't the server, it wasn't the ISO's, it wasn't the server dvd drive. It was the cd writer where I was burning the media. Well, I don't really know if it was the cd writer or the software.
I brought the media of RHEL 4.5 AS to my home, and tried to install them in two different computers: a Toshiba Satellite, with a CD Writer DVD Rom combo, and the installation it booted with no problem. The second computer was a PC with two drives: DVD Rom and CD Writer. The installation hanged in the same point when I tried to boot it in the cd writer, but when I inserted it in the DVD rom, it booted with no problem. So, I proceeded to burn again the media in this PC with Nero 6. I tried to boot in the CD writer, and it booted with no problem. Then I tried again with the dvd rom, and it booted perfectly.
Then I downloaded again RHEL 5.1 and I burned it with this Nero 6. It booted perfectly in the 2 drives of the PC and in lap top. I proceeded then to check all five cd's, and they passed the test.
Today, when I arrived to my job, I inserted that new copy if RHEL 5.1 in my Power Edge 1950, and it booted perfectly. Right now, I'm checking again the cd's.
I thank to all who where interested in helping me, specially to frndrfoe.

Can you please tell me how you managed to install RHEL 5.1 on a Dell 1950? I am trying to do exactly that, using the Dell installation disk, and when I get to the part where it asks me to insert the RHEL media, it complains:
Invalid CD/DVD. Insert the "Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5.0 Media".
How did you persuade the Dell installation disk to recognise the RHEL 5.1 media?

Hi Rob,
For installing the RHEL 5.1 in my PE 1950 I didn't use the Dell installation disk. I used the bootable CD from Red Hat.
I hope it can give you the answer you need.

and when I try to use redhat bootable cd installing, it couldn't find the second hard drive, so I couldn't make a raid 1, who can help me with this?
