httpd service stop fails, no pid, this after latest update

I am running RH enterprise 3.0 have done the latest updates. Prior to that everything was runnng fine. Since then the httpd seem to have gone awry.

There is no pid for httpd, I have tried starting the service it gives the OK, yet it does not show anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

It seems that the php.ini file was modified by the last update, I do find that a little hard to believe...

Just for reference the memory limit was set to 128 I changed it to 8M and rebooted. It is working fine now... It's interesting how 1 little change can screw up an entire system<LOL>

Thanks for responding all.
