how to print system identity on print page
 

Hi All,

I have just joined LQ. I have heard a lot about it but never tried it...

I am not facing any big issue with linux, however, I want to use my printing system in a better way and I am not able to configure it in a way I want..

I am using RHEL 4.0 WS as OS and CUPS 1.1.22 with HPlaserjet 2300 printer. Printer is working fine and all the users are able to print without any problem. What I want is "To track the user/System who has given the print page from the print page". I mean, I am able to track from the log, but I want to print all this information (username, System Name, IP) on the print page itself.

I googled a bit and also searched man pages but unable to find solution.

Is there any way to do it...?

Try(as root from the console or xterm session) something like;

lpr /var/log/cups/page_log

Are you asking for a banner page? A page printed before the job that IDs that job and user?

No, not exactly....

Page must be printerd in the same way as it is printing now, but there should be an information about the user/system on the footer of the page...

Still not following what it is you are requesting. Are you saying that you want to modify the JOB ITSELF so that every page of every document has this ID tag on this?

I can't see how. CUPS is not designed to alter print jobs. If you want that information the application that created the job(OpenOffice or Firefox or whatever) would have to perform that function. I don't see how it could be done in CUPS without risk of screwing up a print job. You'd be adding extra lines that could throw off margins and the like.

Besides what if you are printing letters and the like. Would you want your logon information leaving the building?
