how to get better performance from redhat
 

hi everybody,
I m linux newbie. I m using redhat9 on box with 128mb RAM, 1.6 GHz cpu.
The problem is, my pc is running really slow. I got much better performance with xp :( . How can i improve performance of my pc under linux. Please help. Thanx.

If you mean KDE is slow don't use KDE.
Use gnome instead, or a lightweight window manager, like WM, IceWM etc
I think you need 256 MB ram for KDE to have an acceptable speed

Here are some ideas:

Add more memory.
Stop any unnecessary process, such as PCMCIA and ISDN, etc, if you don't use them.
Be sure to load up the vendor supplied drivers for your video card.

i just installed RH9 on a laptop with
P3 650mhz processor
128mb ram

KDE is the prob, it works great on my super dooooper pc, but chuggs along on the laptop. My solution. i installed icewm window manager and it now smokes along. icewm is not a full featured desktop like KDE or gnome, and i'm not sure if i'd have been able to use it in the early days of my linux love affair. But eh, it's all a learning curve, and one worth learning. give it a go. the icewm online manual is excellent as are the FAQ's.

I will go with what globeTrotter.

And also. I have found that RedHat is one of the slower distros. Of all I have tried, Slackware is the fastest.
Using Slackware and a window manager other that KDE or GNOME, you should have very good response.

Presently I run Slack on P166 with 32MRAM and FluxBox as the window manager. It's good for mail and surfing.

ram....a lot of ram...as soon as swap sace is needed things slow down a lot

then you can unable some services you dont need, it also frees processing power...

other windowmanager...well...it depends if you want ease of use or not....stay with gnome and enjoy but add ram I ve 1gig and performance is good

another thing you might consider is to change the kenel to 2.6..this will deffinately speed things up

I have 1gb of ram and a 2700 XP+ athalon processor and KDE on RH9 still runs really slow. My swap never even comes close to full when I run the OS and it runs far slower then my XP install on the same drive. Any ideas what could be contributing to that? I usually have an average of 70 processes which seems really high. I just don't know which ones are alright to keep and others that aren't. :(

Id recommend using gnome instead

then just switch off some of the services you dont need...it will give you a speed boost

that's so true. I remember using suse 3 years ago and i never used gnome.
then i switched to redhat and i remember having to customize so many thing to make KDE a friendly environment.
now in fedora, i never - ever touch KDE. I do really believe that redhat hate KDE and they are doing what ever they can to encourage their users to use gnome
