how to change default login manager (for runlevel 5)

i am trying to setup some systems to that they start a simple xdm login manager. However, I haven't had any success.
I've chenged /etc/X11/xinitrc/Xclients to simply say:
exec xdm

then, in /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession
exec xdm
and in /etc/sysconfig/desktop:

DESKTOP="xdm"
DISPLAYMANAGER="wmaker"

However, i have had no luck

i did, it is set to start at runlevel 5. In fact if I start with runlevel 3 and startx manually (or call xdm) it works fine
