how stable is redhat4 with 2.6.9 ?

this is amazing !
two different computers with centos 4 (clone of redhat4) kernel 2.6.9
soooo many problems.

many strange messages on shutdown and while working.
when init 0 , the system freezes completeley.

why is this happening?
seems to me that the newer linux gets it becomes unstable and worse.
never sow redhat 5/6/7 crashes , never!!!

what do you think?

This could be a problem with your configuration or hardware. I have not experienced the same problems as yourself and I have been running CentOS 4.0 since it was released.

Don't know what is wrong with my setup.
I am facing a lot of instability problems with this one.
Should I update everything?
Do the updates increase stability at all?
I did a fresh install of Cent OS 4.0 , and there are some 250 updates pending.
Please guide me what should be my first priority while updating.

Howzit

I have not heard anyone really complain about CentOS 4. It must be the way you setup your machine with the hardware you have. Even though you upgrade with latest updates if it was wrongly configured it will remain with those errors. Therefore try to update first too see if any of those error disappear if not then you may have to troubleshoot a little. I would suggest in upgrading to a better kernel as this kernek is not the greatest.

Another version similar to CentOS is Whitebox just another distro that you can try and take a look at

cheers

Yeah, I know what WhiteBox is.

I would stick with Cent OS. If it still keeps hanging, I will switch to Fedora Core.
