How Many CDs Needed for RedHat?

I am planning to try out the free version from download. Do I reallly need all 3 ISOs for a working redhat install? Mandrake can work with only 1 cd.

Wink

For a basic install, CD1 is enough. CD 2 is quite frequently needed.
It depends on which packages you select. Its somewhat playing Roulette.
I recommend you to download CD1 and 2.

I just cancelled package install because it wanted CD 3.

IMPORTANT: If u set up RH, select a rather minimalistic install (without adding package details). To select a Server and X with gnome & kde is OK if you have CD 1 and 2.
Only if you get all packages on the first run, the kernel is installed and your new setup
is able to boot.

Okay I downloaded and installed the first cd but got stucked halfway thru the install because a package I chose needed the cd2. Why I cannot cancel the "insert cd2 " message?
Mandrake has that option that if an additional cd is not available, you can cancel at the prompt but the installation can proceed. In redhat you are stucked with the cd2 prompt.

I did not find an explicit kernel source rpm. I think it's in the kernel packages of CD1. If you don't download CD2, be minimalistic on the package selection. It would be much nicer if the RH installer would first care for a proper kernel installation. Disadvantage: you boot your system once more. So you could verify if your system boots OK. I only installed RH because the HW vendor (HP) offers drivers only for a selected set of distros. I rather got used to SuSE. But knowing several distros is always a +.

After a lot of modifications to the xf86config file-the monitor and screen sections in particular I now have a 'somewhat' working red hat install. Yet sometimes my usb mouse would be jerky and some applications would take too long to load.

All hte other distros I have tried-including a very similar mdk did not have this much problem

Oh well I think red hat is not for me or not for my old pc.

Thanks for the help!
