Hello and welcome to LQ.

The simple answer is that files and directories can have a number of permissions but it have to be known what filesystem you have. Not all filesystems support all permissions.

A good thing about Red Hat is that you have access to a very good documentation and plenty of online sources.

Can we assume you are using the default XFS filesystem on a current release?

To start. https://access.redhat.com/documentat...de/ch-xfs.html

Linux have three user class
1 User 2 Group 3 Other
for file permission such as read(r) , write(w), execute (e) which has octal number value
for read (r) = 4
Write (w) = 2
Execute (x)= 1

drwxr-xr-x. 2 pratik pratik 4096 Sep 16 13:45 Pictures
-rw-rw-r--. 1 pratik pratik 3 Nov 21 15:21 pratik

in above example pratik is file and having -rw-rw-r-- permission i.e User can rean and write, group also read and write, and other only read
and first eg. Pictures is directory that why it is show d first.

for rest of the permission refer jefro link
