I have hp notebook (hp pavilion Entertainment PC) in which sound do not work .At startup when its control comes at udev: sound is gone muted. It sound card is detected but sound could not become start. but in window vista it works fine.
What is the chipset of the Laptop? ICH10? Check in System -> Administration -> Hardware. If it is ICH10, sound drivers get confused and do not work at the moment.

thanks for reply . kindly see the detail of chipset:
vendor : Intel corporation
model: 82801|(ICH9 familly)HD Audio Controler
module:snd-hda-intel
I have install wine 1.0.10 package but it also does not help me. How could i start the sound. show me the way pls.
It should be working out of the box, as far as I know. What errors do you get when you try to play some music (find some ogg if you have not added mp3 support from external repository.

1- My notebook shows the mute sign and i could not able to unmute it.
2- When i try to play *.mp3 extention file I got this error " you do not have the decoder installed to handle this file.you might need to install the nesessary plugin".
3- Its soundcard is properly detected by the machine ,is it means that its driver is also detected by the hardware?
4- If the driver dectected how could i unmute it ?
Lack of ability tu unmute could suggest the lack of drivers. On a server with disabled sound card, I am not able to open volume control dialog at all. Instead I get error dialog.
You need mp3 codecs like mad to play mp3 songs.
There is System -> Administration -> Sound card detection GUI, try that to test your sound card.

I have done as you suggest me : system-> Administration -> Sound card
then " it got detected " is it mean that driver is also detected or not ? Actually , when i restart the PC sound is working but when the control comes at "Starting Udev ..[ok] " it automatically goes " Muted".
the problem is how to unmute it . I could not able to unmute it.
whether it is driver problem or alsa problem. "Service alsa start " also not working.
Udev is responsible for choosing appropriate drivers.
I suggest you check/report a bug to Red Hat bugzilla.

I think it is not possible to start the sound in notebook PC.
thanks for your kind consideration, and taking interest regarding this problem.

That is a false presumption. My notebook (ICH8 to be honest), and many others have working sound, so it is absolutely possible. There only might me some problems with drivers for your chipset that are not yet solved in RHEL/CentOS 5.x.
I took time to google your problem. This is what I found out.
