hosts file?

this is what i get when i first log in:

Could not look up internet address for tedlogan.
This will prevent GNOME from operating correctly.
It may be possible to correct the problem by adding
tedlogan to the file /etc/hosts.

now, if i open a terminal, it shows as root@tedlogan, so i at least have it half-right and i have added to the host file the name tedlogan, but still get that error. any ideas?

i m not sure but u can change display maanger with KDE and try login with it.

go to F1 (press ctrl+alt+f1) >> login as root >> type 'swtichdesk kde' >> now back to F7 and try login again.

If you'r using RHL9 u can get 'seesion' option at login prompt, where u can change to KDE.

about /etc/hosts, you may try adding static IP address with host name and try.

hope this helps.

well, the only potentially bad part of adding a static ip is that i am going thru a router. i'm pretty sure it would work, i just can't recall having to do that before. i have added the name "tedlogan" and the ip of 192.168. to both the hosts file and in the network settings, but still get it... frustrating. or more accurately, annoying. thanks for you help thus far.
