When I shutdown, I notice this everytime in the console:

Unmounting file system: Unmount2: Device or resourse is busy [FAILED]
Unmount: /var device is busy

----------------

I get the message 3 times and it finally shutdown.

I suspect the RHN Update....but how do I know it for sure?

How do I disable the RHN Update?

OS is RH Enterprise AS 3.0 (Taroon Update 3)

The easiest way would be to disable rhnsd. Goto the concole and type chkconfig rhnsd off. The other method would be to change the interval that up2date using to RHN this can be done in the /etc/sysconfig/rhn/rhnsd or u can use the cmd /etc/init.d/rhnsd -i (specify interval that rhnsd should wait between checking).

The other thing if still not successfull then try to check the processors running and start killing one buy one until u able to shutdown once u id the process this will be a start knowing how to shutdown the machine
