Help me!!! GUI and user profile problem

well I've been using redhad 9 for my graduation project and I encountered a problem,
I gave permissions to users using the command:
chmod -R 777 /path/to/folder/
so the other users would have full control on the folder and all of it's contents.
after a user other than the owner of a file edited files in that folder, the desktop of the owner vanished and I found an empty screen full of error messages with no text or buttons inside and could do nothing but reseting the PC again!!!
this problem happened twice with root and another user!!!
is it because of permissions or there could be another reason (OS bugs, virus ...)
please send me information if you have a solution to my problem,
Best regards

You actually didn't give users permissions, well you did but you gave EVERYONE access. Wouldn't it be better to create a group, and add the users that need permission, to that group and then just chgrp the map they need access too ?

first I want to thank you for your reply!
I'm not a pro in linux and I know I made a mistake in doing that but even the deamons of the package that was installed in the folder on which I gave the permissions didn't work at all!!!
do you think that the command was the reason to a whole user part of the system to fail?
Thanks in advance

Could you perhaps post the details of your project.

As for as I can tell right now you are trying to make other people use certain applications on your computer within a certain map ? But as with most applications, they link to other libraries and such which then aren't usable by those users, so this might explain your crashes.

Please give more details concerning the project, it'll help us help you .

I'll explain my project as you said!
we are trying to configure and use a pool o computers using HTC package (condor)and the we can't submit a job as we are root but it is prefared that the owner of the package must be root!!!
so we had to give another user the permissions to run the package cause the owner was root!!! I admit that the command was not perfect but the error occurred on the same PC twice and the other one was ok, and only me and my partner know the accounts that can gain access and all what we did was editing of a text file relates to the package in a folder out of the kernel!!!
hope I explained it clearly and thank you again for your help!
