Help: Installing 9.0 on a HP DL360 G4

Hi,

Hope someone can help me here... I've got a brand new HP DL360 G4 server that I want to install Redhat 9.0 on to.

I've got as far as the GUI part of the install but it fails with "An error has occurred- no valid devices were found on which to create new filesystems"

Now I assume that it's failing on the SCSI array controller, a HP Smart Array 6i, but I'm at a loss as to where to go from here... Anyone help?

BTW This is my first Linux install so please assume I know nothing...

Cheers, Jason

Ok...

When you get a message like that it usually means that the installer did not detect the disk controller... in your case the HP Smart Array 6i. If the disk controller is not detected then, obviously, the hard drives won't get picked up either. You'll probably need to get a driver diskette for the Smart Array card.

I would contact hp support to see if they still have a driver diskette available for Red Hat 9...I've noticed recently that most of their server drivers for Red Hat have been moved to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, so I don't know how far you'll be able to get with Red Hat 9. Again, contact their support team or search the hp support site for a driver.

If you are able to download and create a driver diskette, boot the server up to the first installation cd rom.

At the installation prompt type:

linux dd

This will tell the installer that you need to install a driver. The installation will pause and prompt you for your driver diskette. Once you have the driver loaded then you should be able to see the hard drives and partition them accordingly.

Thanks for the response hkb33, and a very complete response may I say.

Yep that's pretty much the decision I came to, I'll buy a copy of Red Hat Enterprise and run with that at least then it's supported by HP.

Thanks again, Jason
