GRUB Loader shows all the versions

I have WinXP Pro and Red Hat Linux Fedora Core 2 installed on separate partitions. When the GRUB Loader shows up there are 3 different versions of Linux to choose from. I patch my Linux often so is there a way to remove the older versions from the GRUB loader? I just want my WinXP and the newest Linux version to show up.

I'm new at Linux so if you have any suggestions give details, Thanks!

You need to uninstall the old kernels. to do this, make sure you boot using the newest kernel, then
$rpm -qa | grep -i kernel
a list of installed kernels will be printed to the screen then do
#rpm -e kernel-version
to delete the old kernels as listed after running the command above.

hmmm, If I understand the q it may be easier to just remove those unwanted entries in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file?

Yes you understood right and yes editing grub.conf will remove those entries, but the problem is /boot will be filled with old kernels that are not being used. Removing the old kernels, also removes them from the grub.conf.

Adding new kernel entries to the GRUB bootmenu and removing entries are automated steps, done in a kernel package's post-install and pre-uninstall scripts.

When you install a new kernel update, you keep older ones for safety reasons and because the modules for the currently running kernel cannot be installed until you boot a different kernel.
