glibc errors with passwd on RHEL 4.2

Recently I have had issues changing passwords on accounts in RHEL 4.2. When logged in as normal user, issuing the passwd command allows you to enter in your old password, then immediately crashes with the following error:

*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid next size (fast)

The issue goes away when I elevate to superuser so I imagine that it must be a permissions issue. The only change I have issued recently was running pwconv to fix another passwd issue. Anyone have similar problems with passwd? The kernel is x386, 2.6.9-11.

Thanks,

Adam
