Question Flickering monitor

Hi,

I have a Dell M992, 19' monitor and the onboard graphics card (intel(R)845g/gl... ). The monitor works fine in Windows XP. It displays exactly the refresh rate that I set. After installing Redhat 9 and making my system to have the dual-boot capability, the monitor could only display at 60 Hz of vertical refresh rate when I am running Redhat. Doesn't matter what refresh rate I set in the XF86Config file, the vertical refresh rate is always 60 Hz. It puzzles me because the monitor displays correctly in Windows XP. I would appreciate that if anyone could help me to get the monitor to display at a higher refresh rate to stop flickering. Thanks.

Rober

I'm not quite sure what the fconfig file is, but the file you need to edit to fix the refresh rate is in /etc/X11/XF86config. The line in particular you're looking for is under Section "Monitor" and it is HorizSync.

On the back of the monitor it should have a range associated with it ( I'd give it to you here, but the dell tech specs suck on this monitor for some reason ). Plug those numbers on the back for HorizSync, and if it has VertRefresh in there too, something like this:

HorizSync 30.0 - 70.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 120.0

Once you've done that, CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE from your GUI.

flickering monitor

Thanks Technoslave!

I did that but it still behaved the same way every time I ran Redhat. This is what it said in the user manual of Dell M992.

Vertical refresh rate: 50-160 Hz
Horizontal refresh rate: 30 - 90 KHz

I edited these numbers into the XF86Config file and rebooted the system, but the monitor still showing 60 Hz of vertical refresh rate. Could this be dued to the driver? Redhat shows that the driver for the intel845 is i810.
