editing grub.conf in recovery mode
 

After a problem that required me to restore from a backup, but a backup in which one of the logical drives can't be reloaded due to archive corruption, I need to restore/edit grub. I'm running dual boot xp and redhat 9, xp boots fine, but I just get a grub prompt if I select Linux. I have a boot partition for linux and that is where I installed grub during my original setup.

I know I'm going to have to edit grub.conf to point to the correct drives now that the drive locations have changed, how do I do that from the grub prompt or from recovery from the redhat cd??

Also, how can I list how the hard drive is laid out at the grub> prompt? when booting from a boot floppy. I have read to use the df command, but can't figure out how, is there a different command?

suggest to boot up from RH9 CD1 and into RESCUE mode
after run command: chroot , your system environment as same as before, you can try to restore grub.conf by manual.

Thanks for the tip, I ended up using a linux boot floppy, guessed at my boot hda, found linux root=/dev/hda9 got me in to graphical linux, and from there I edited the fstab and grub.conf files to get back up and running.
